IBPS is a 10-hour course teaching the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, promoting, and teaching the NRA BPS course. IBPS is presented in two parts, Basic Instructor Training (BIT) & discipline-specific instructor training. The course covers NRA policies & procedures, basic public speaking skills, confidence & competence, learning objectives, training methodology, teaching philosophy, use of training teams, training aids, organizing a course, budgeting, preparing to teach, evaluating & improving the performance of new shooters.

Instructor Candidates (IC) must be experienced shooters that possess and demonstrate a solid background in firearm safety, handling skills, & shooting skills acquired through previous firearms training and/or shooting experience. In addition, IC must be intimately familiar with various handgun action types. IC demonstrates previous experience, organizational, & teaching skills via pre-course qualification, practical exercises in course, & instructor written exams. IC takes turns working in teams, teaching actual portions of the BPS course to other ICs role-playing as basic students. IC will receive the NRA Trainer’s Guide, IC Packet (lesson plans to prepare you to teach), and BPS student course packet.
